200 Goan families to get Gulf war compensation |
PANJIM, SEPT 8 — More than 200 Goan families will receive compensation from the United Nation Compensation Commission (UNCC) after almost 15 years following the 1991 Kuwait war.
The commissioner for NRI Affairs, Government of Goa, Eduardo Faleiro today said “the Ministry of External Affairs had informed him that 290 Goans had been awarded compensation, but the compensation could not be paid to the beneficiaries as their present address was not known.”
Faleiro said that the NRI office in Goa advertised the names of the beneficiaries in the newspapers to inform them about the compensation. Around 52 persons submitted their claims according to Faleiro.
Further the NRI office also contacted the Police HQ’s in Goa and requested them to identify the other beneficiaries. “As a result another 130 beneficiaries approached the department to claim their compensation,” according to Faleiro.
The compensation varies from Rs 2 lakh to Rs 50 lakh he said. Although the last date for submitting the claims was August 20, the date for submitting claims for payment of compensation has been extended to September 30.
Faleiro said “the beneficiaries will have to contact the designated officer at the Ministry of External Affairs before the last date. A specific mention of “Kuwait claim,” should be endorsed on the letter of correspondence to the ministry, according to Faleiro.
According to Faleiro only those who had applied for the compensation and whose applications were approved by the UNCC would be entitled to claim the compensation. He said that there were others who approached the NRI office saying that that were in Kuwait during the war but had not applied for the compensation at that time and enquired if compensation could be claimed now.
Faleiro said that on contacting the ministry it was learnt that applying for compensation now is not possible. The UNCC has a skeleton staff to disburse compensation only to those who had applied before and whose applications were already approved earlier according to Faleiro.
