Tasmanian fisherman are being advised against
making excessive compensation claims for lost income due to marine
protected areas.
The Tasmanian Government has released a
policy statement detailing the process of applying for compensation.
State Minister for Fisheries Steve Kons says
it is important claims can be proved and are reasonable.
"Each decision will certainly set a level of
precedence," he said.
"If some in the fishing industry decide to
put ambit claims forward, it may impact on others and the approach
that the Government will take."
Mr Kons says so far two claims have been
received.
"We're waiting now for the claims to come
forward - they'll be individually assessed and naturally they'll be
subject to judicial review if the applicant isn't happy," he said.
"So it was a process we undertook earlier on
this year, unfortunately it took longer than we expected to
formalise it and now it's there and industry certainly has an
opportunity to put its legitimate claims forward."
